In fact, some researchers have released statistics showing that distracted driving is one of the key reasons that car insurance rates rise in certain areas.

Inclement weather not only makes it harder to see the road and other people on the road, it can also throw dangerous obstacles in front of you. Tree limbs, garbage cans, and other items can quickly turn your neighborhood street into an obstacle course.

If possible, avoid driving in inclement weather. If you have any concerns about whether you can operate your vehicle safely, then wait a while for the weather to calm.

When traveling internationally, make sure the area you are going to visit is safe. It might not seem like a sticking point but there is nothing that is more important than your own safety. So make sure that the area is not in any danger and make sure that you have the proper precautions and measures in place in case an emergency arrives (i.e. knowing where the embassy is and knowing if your insurance will cover you at local hospitals).

One such bridge that featured regularly in the lives of Michelangelo and Leonardo de Vinci was the Ponte Vecchio which spans the Arno River that flows through Florence Italy. The Millau Bridge in southern France is the world’s tallest bridge that permits vehicles to cross. In fact this French bridge is actually taller than the Eiffel Tower.  It spans the river Tam, suspended on enormous cables. Tourists flock to see this engineering marvel that extends over 8000 feet in length with a single span longer than 1,000 feet. Its maximum clearance is almost 900 feet.  Enjoy the ride and spectacular views, but don’t get dizzy.

Of course the Golden Gate Bridge is probably the most popular bridge in the world. The Golden Gate Strait that flows between Marin County and San Francisco gave birth to this unique bridge’s name. It is still one of the longest suspension bridges in the world and is colored in the eye-catching orange color to help keep it visible in the heavy fog that often covers the bay. It too is one of the them most famous tourist attractions in the world.

In 1947 St. Louis held a design competition to see whose design would be selected and built. 147 applicants entered the competition. The winner was Eero Saarinen an American/Finnish architect who had won some acclaim for his ability to successfully vary his style when the project demanded it.

Hannskarl Bandel was the structural engineer who took Saarinen’s design and made changes that were necessary so that the design could actually be built.  Bandel is recognized as the one who altered the inverted catenary shape so that it would work once actually built. Saarinen attempted to achieve a certain “soaring” effect that made the design appear slightly stretched. Bandel  took the chain Saarinen had been using, went away and returned several days later having constructed the exact curve to the arc the architect had been after.

The structure began on February 12, 1963 and took two years to complete, finishing in October of 1965.  The completed structure was as wide as it was tall at 630 feet becoming the tallest structure to hold people in Missouri.  Bandel had added weight to the first 300 feet of the structure placing over 25,000 tons of concrete into the arch’s foundation. This shifted the center of gravity down making the structure much more stable than it otherwise would have been.  But in the end he had brought into physical being the elegant and impressive design dreamed up by Saarinen, and creating one of the marvels in Western World.

The theater is equally famous for the collection of autographs, handprints and footprints left in the cement in the theater’s courtyard, referred to as the “Forecourt of the Stars.”  There you’ll find footprints of such well known stars as Douglas Fairbanks (also a founding partner of the theater) and the fingerprints of Jennifer Aniston. You’ll also find the gun prints of Roy Rogers along Trigger’s hoof print.  And while most stars have generally left a footprint or handprint you will also find the cigar prints of Groucho Marx and George Burns.  In the case of other stars known for certain “impressions” they left on the industry you will also find Betty Grable’s legs, John Wayne’s fist and the noses of both Bob Hope and Jimmy Durrante.  And not be left to Muggles alone, the wand prints of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson have also magically appeared in the cement of this famous courtyard.

Grauman’s Chinese Theater also hosted the Academy Awards – from 1944 to 1946. It was made a historical and cultural landmark in 1968. For a brief period of time the theater was owned by Ted Mann of “Mann Theatres” notoriety and was renamed the “Mann Chinese Theater”; but by 2001ownership shifted to Paramount and Warner Brothers, who though they acquired the Mann brand name as well turned the name of theater back to Grauman’s Chinese Theater.

Traveling through a foreign country by automobile is a great way to get an up close feel for a country and its people without being on a tightly fixed schedule. Driving in most countries requires some preparation.

The U.S. Department of State notes that Americans are killed every year in automobile accidents because they didn’t know the country’s driving rules and laws. The State Department offers severl suggestions. First and foremost, understand the driving rules and laws of the country. Because many countries do not automatically accept an American state driver’s license, it is best to get an International Driving Permit (IDP). An IDP is the international translation for a drivers license written in 10 different laguages. Other documents that should always be carried include auto registration documents, insurance certificates, passports and visas.

Automobile insurance requirement differ from country to country, so it is advisable to purhase additional coverage that is equivalent to the coverage carried at home. Remember that U.S. coverage does not always cover travel abroad. It is also important to carry a copy of the country’s driving laws, special road permits, Always buckle seat belts – failure will result in an automatic ticket. Another international rule is to honk the car’s horn when going around curves and blink headlights when passing another car.

Many countries require cars to carry reflective jackets and warning triagles in case of an accident. Finally, where the question of drinking while driving is concerned – this simple answer is don’t drink, period. Almost every foreign country has  severe penalties for driving under the influence, up to and including imprisonment for the first offense.

Trains are possibly the most under utilized mode of transportation in the United States and yet, traveling by train is more efficient and enjoyable than traveling by air or automobile. Riding the rails is a relaxing and less stressful way to travel and at the same time, escape the fast pace of daily life.

Amtrak is the quasi-independent trail service funded by the U.S. government specifically for passenger service.  Amtrak operates several long distance cross country routes between major cities on the east and west coasts, as well as routes from Chicago to the west coast. While Amtrak’s long distance service has been criticized as slow and inefficient by European standards, the longer cross country trains have been hailed by some travel writers as a “great way to see America.” Travelers are particularly impressed by the full service dining cars, the upper level viewing cars and the camaraderie shared by fellow travelers. Amtrak also has the added advantage of connecting with local train service in most major cities.

Cost is one of the most attractive parts of traveling by train. Train fares are generally comparable to bus fares. On the other hand, the addition of a sleeping compartment to the fare makes train travel cost about the same as flying. While there are currently very few high speed Amtrak rail lines in service, the experience of slowing down and enjoying the trip more than makes up for the lack of speed. In fact, the joy of slowing down is one of the best parts of a train trip.

One of the phrases used to describe Australia is “laid back.” However, Australia is much more. It is a unique country, as rich in history, people and growth as it is in geography diversity.

The continent that is now Australia was discovered by the Dutch in 1606.  British explorer James Cook claimed the Australian continent in 1829 and it was first settled as a penal colony. Having my sister here was wonderful and exhausting at the same time. I love her dearly, but when anyone visits around the holidays, it can cause a lot of stress. This is especially true when the family member stays for a long time. Now, don’t misunderstand me, I would have been happy to have her longer even. Still, things like blogging and cleaning and just taking time for myself don’t happen when we have visitors here.

Besides this, someone in my family thought it would be a good idea to have an early Christmas celebration so that she could celebrate with us all.

While everyone agrees that Christmas is not about the gifts, it still would not feel like Christmas without them. It is the worst oil spill in U.S. history but it has not spoiled the beaches of the Gulf Coast. Tourism bureaus are trying to get the word out that the beaches are still open and vacation plans should not be changed. The news coverage that the spill has received has caused a great deal of concern about traveling to the area but local officials insist it is safe. The Mississippi Development Authority Tourism Division put out this statement to counteract the misinformation that they say is being put out by the media, “it continues to be safe to travel to Mississippi and to our beaches that border the Gulf.”

In Gulf Shores Alabama the beaches have been declared safe to use as well. At the end of July, the Alabama Department of Public Health lifted the swimming advisory for the gulf waters at Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan. The state says water conditions have improved dramatically. The state has also reopened all waters for recreational catch and release fishing. A number of hotels and resorts in the area have cut prices to try and lure tourists back.

The Florida Gulf Coast has never been negatively impacted by the oil spill. Beaches up and down the state remain open. To hammer home the point that travel to the area should not be a concern, President Obama himself if planning to vacation with his family in the region. The White House has announced that the first family will be spending some time on the beach at an undisclosed location before the Presidents daughters have to start back to school. In another sign that life in the region is returning to normal. the Agriculture Department has opened the waters off of Florida’s coast to commercial fishing. The government has determined that seafood from the Gulf is safe to eat.

Although not popular in America, train travel is still widely utilized in Europe and elsewhere across the world. One of the most famous railways in the world is the Trans-Siberian Railroad, or the Transsib, which is the longest railroad in the world. The railway has three different routes. The Trans-Mongolian route goes from Moscow to Beijing, China, through Mongolia. The Trans-Manchurian goes to Beijing, and the Trans-Siberian goes to the Vladivostok, Russia.

For die-hard travelers, this railway is almost a destination in itself, and popular among many tourists as an experience of a lifetime. There are several roots of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, one of which, the main one, starts in St. Petersburg and runs through Moscow and east across Russia all the way to the eastern Russian port city of Vladivostok. The railway spans two different continents, Europe and Asia, and goes through several times zones and almost 90 cities. But even though the train passes through several time zones, the train runs on Moscow time. The route that goes between Moscow and Vladivostok goes across 5727 miles or 9216 kilometers, which is the longest direct service line. And all of it stays within Russia. The railway also goes to several areas of China, including Shanghai and Beijing.

The Moscow-Vladivostok route of the Trans-Siberian railroad was begun in 1891. Construction took nearly 30 years. The construction stopped in 1916. The railroad is also frequently used for cargo. Luxury hotels have a plethora of interesting features. One such hotel is the Marina Bay Sands, which is a new hotel located in Singapore, eastern Asia. The huge hotel with its three towers, each with more stories than many of the surrounding buildings in the large city, is topped by what looks like a huge cruise ship or maybe even a spaceship from the side. So what makes this hotel so special? What are the unique features of this ostentatious hotel? For starters, the hotel has over 2500 rooms, fifty stories, and to boot, it has a pool on top of the towers that measures 150 meters. In the American metric system, that is approximately 500 feet. At that length, it’s the equivalent of about 1.5 lengths of a standard NFL football field. At that size, the “pool” is more like a lake. It also is called an infinity pool, also known as a vanishing edge pool. These pools have a special design, and the design makes it so that there is an optical illusion: it appears that the water extends to infinity, which is where the “infinity pool”n ame comes from. These sorts of pools are often found in luxury resorts around the world. This particular pool at Marina Bay Sands sits on top of the 55-story towers of the hotel. Not only that, but the mall has a museum, a huge, classy shopping mall, and an indoor canal. The shopping mall contains restaurants owned by celebrity chefs, a casino, convention center, outdoor event plaza, and movie theaters, as well.

The autumn wind is beginning to blow a little bit colder. Just like with every season, the first few days are just like the previous season. Istanbul, Turkey, is a very old city. In the early days of the Roman Empire, Istanbul (called by another name) was the capital. In the fourth century and for several centuries thereafter, it became the capital of the Byzantine Empire. Then it served a short stint as the capital city of the Latin Empire. Then in medieval times up until the early twentieth century, Istanbul was the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The city is a great place to visit to see the many buildings from each of these periods.

There is a collection of mosques in the city that you can visit for free. There is the Suleymaniey Mosque close to Istanbul University. This mosque has beautiful architectural features of the Ottoman Empire and very nice views of the city. It is also a very old mosque. It was completed during the 1500s and is really large, as well. Another mosque you should definitely visit is the Sultanahmet Mosque. This mosque is also known as the “Blue Mosque” because of its blue mosaics on the inside. This beautiful building lets you see a bit of Istanbul’s history. It was built in the early seventeenth century and is style after the classical Ottoman buildings of the time.

Next on the list of old buildings you should check out is the Topkapi Palace, which was functioning as the central administrative headquarters of the Ottoman Empire from the late 1400s to the mid 1800s. That is four hundred years, folks. The palace has dozens of buildings, four courtyards, and has collections of relics from the Ottoman Empire and the people who lived at the palace, which at one point was around 5000 people. Going farther back in history takes you to the Basilica Cistern, one of the many ancient cisterns that are located underneath the city of Istanbul. Here you are in the Byzantine Empire of the sixth century.

First off, you can see museums in Istanbul for free. No charge! The Istanbul Modern art museum is formerly a warehouse, and it is free admission every Thursday. Or there is the Museum of Energy which educates you about the history of electricity. You can find this museum in the Santralistanbul culture complex. At this museum you can participate in many interactive educational activities that have to do with electricity. Fun for the whole family! Then there is the Museum of Painting and Culture. Famous Turkish artists’ works are housed here. The museum has free admission during the day from 10 am to 4:30 pm. That is the case except when it is closed, which is on Sundays and Mondays. Plan your trip accordingly.

Museums are not the only things to see for free in the city of Istanbul. There is in Istanbul a variety of flea markets and shops. You can go to the open-air market in the suburb of Ortakoy. Another market is the spice market called Spice Bazaar where you can find a variety of spices and other things as well like dried fruits or nuts. Then there is the Kapali Carsi, which is the largest covered market in the entire country. And remember, we’re talking about Turkey, so this is saying a lot. Here you can find lots of supposedly authentic Turkish goods, such as the famed Turkish rugs, handmade pottery, and more. There are also many antiques available for purchase here. But it doesn’t cost anything to just walk around. And before you go, practice bargaining’here and at other markets you will need to negotiate with the sellers about the prices and if you’re interested in paying less, be prepared to drive the bargain down the line unflinchingly.

There is a new airplane seat being introduced at a conference for aircraft interiors in the near future called the “SkyRider.” This contraption narrows the space between seats by making it only 23 inches between each seat and the next seat. The seat has been compared to riding on a saddle on a horse. Although the SkyRider changes the experience for the passenger on the airline, it’s not the same thing as standing up on the flight. It’s a different kind of seat, but it’s a seat nonetheless.

The whole point of a vacation is to get away from the everyday. Nothing does that like a foreign getaway. Head to southern Europe for sunny times and rich culture. It is one of the biggest tennis tournaments in the world and it takes place in one of the worlds most exciting cities. All of the top tennis players in the world are signed up to play in the tournament including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Venus Williams and Serena Williams. While the stars come to win a championship, they can also be found out on the town. The Williams sisters love to shop in New York City and say their favorite stop is at the Vintage clothing shops downtown. Mid-Town is an area that all of the tennis players visit when they are not practicing because of the great restaurants. American James Blake can often be found in early September at TAO. The Asian restaurant is a favorite of other celebrities as well like Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman and Robert DeNiro.

The U.S. Open is held in Flushing Meadows Park which has twice been home to the World’s Fair and is a world class attraction of its own. The unisphere from the Worlds Fair is there along with numerous statues and monuments. There are two large lakes in the park, a zoo and museum. Best of all, the park is easily accessible by public transportation so there is no need to rent a car for your trip.

In between watching tennis matches, you will have time to explore New York’s top attractions. Times Square and Broadway will keep you busy at night and your spare time during the day can be spent visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. While you are there take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry.

First, you should check and double check all your arrangements before you leave. A day or so before, check your tickets and reservations to make sure all information is correc. Packing is an important element to enjoying your vacation. Find out what the weather is supposed to be like and pack your clothes accordingly. When it is time for a summer vacation most people are thinking about somewhere sunny and warm. This summer has been so brutally hot across much of the United States though that a number of travellers are looking for someplace cool. This may be the summer for a trip to Alaska, Argentina or Australia.

In Anchorage, Alaska the average temperature in July is just under 60 degrees. This is a great place to visit to get away from the hot humid summer weather. Boat tours are offered in Anchorage to go whale watching or see the glaciers. An Alaskan cruise is another great way to beat the heat, there are deals to be found because of the recession.

Another cool summer vacation spot is San Francisco. The average temperature for the city by the bay in July is just over 70 degrees. It was Mark Twain who joked that the coldest winter he ever experienced was summer in San Francisco. There is so much to see in San Francisco from the Golden Gate Bridge to Fisherman’s Wharf. Napa Wine Country is also just a short drive away and so is the Monterrey Peninsula.

July is high season in Argentina where the average temperature is about 60 degrees. Not too far from Buenos Aries, you can head for the Penitentes and go skiing or travel to Patagonia and explore one of the biggest ice shelfs outside of the North or South Pole. You can also take a July ski vacation in Santiago, Chile. This is peak season in Valle Nevado.

If you are feeling really adventurous the temperature is cool in New Zealand. Air New Zealand has slashed fares from the U.S. to try and drum up some business. Hiking the Fox Glacier or the Franz Joseph Glacier will be an experience you will never forget. You are sure to forget about the heat and humidity inside one of the many ice caves.
